Technology Trends to Watch for Next Year
Advances in technology are made practically overnight, greatly impacting college campuses and even creating new ‘campuses’ online. Applications and devices that seemed to be objects of the distant future just a few years ago are now a reality. In the past year, “American colleges and universities responded to the ever-advancing IT requirements of their students and faculty with mobile pilot programs and investments in online learning.” With such progress made in 2010, experts can only begin to imagine what new technologies might be developed in 2011. Five common predictions are listed below.
1. Cloud computing will grow.
The use of cloud computing is expected to increase, because of the benefit it presents to higher education. With cloud computing, “schools can create large collections of loosely sorted data,” said to Bob Spielvogel, CTO at EDC, a nonprofit organization that develops programs to solve educational problems. Schools can use this data to record and assess a student’s progress throughout the duration of his or her college career.
Gaining an Online Applied Sciences Education
Gaining an education in applied sciences allows students to step into a variety of careers that pertain directly to their interests. Students can focus their studies on areas such as business, computer information, and criminal justice. Gaining an online applied sciences education in is possible through numerous online colleges and universities.
The focus of schooling is to train students to apply scientific reasoning to problems that may be encountered in areas such as research, product invention, and more. Traditionally, the industry is connected with engineering, technology, and business. Today, the field has grown to encompass a wide range of areas, which are now available for learning online. Students that are interested in obtaining an applied sciences degree can complete an associate’s or bachelor’s degree program.
Associate’s degree programs prepare students to step into a career immediately after graduation. Education is focused and many online schools offer students degree choices that require little to no hands-on training. Major areas of study offered can include online courses in criminal justice, business administration, accounting, engineering, and allied health. Students may have to complete internships that give them hands-on experience especially for fields like radiology and biomedical. Some course topics that are included in programs may include:
Prevention Equals Communication Plus Education – Strategies To Prevent Cyber Bullying
The technology of today allows users to become more connected much more quickly.
Communication is global, occurring at breakneck speed in every recess of the world on web sites, cell phones, blogs, social networks, and online radio.
The same media now are being utilized as an avenue for bullying, or cyberbullying. In our prior, less technologically-advanced society, children were taunted and bullied on playgrounds and in school hallways, fortunate to a degree to have the safe haven of home in which to return. Nowadays, with computers in most homes, the bullying continues via social networking sites (i.e. Myspace), instant messaging, and e-mail. Worse yet, the bullying is becoming easier; one can harass with some degree on anonymity allowing victims and victimizers alike the ability to abuse from the safety of their homes.
According to one poll, 42% of children have been bullied online, and one in four has been bullied more than once. We are beginning to see the effects of this as more children are breaking under the harassment and turning to violence and self-injurious behaviors due to the onset of depression and low self-esteem.
